The Prairie Creek Visitor Center is situated just off scenic Newton B Drury Parkway, a 10-mile drive through the heart of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Foothill Prairie Creek Trail Accessible Loop: This 1.95-mile trail starts 0.25 miles down the Cathedral Trees Trail from the park Visitor Center and uses a portion of the Prairie Creek Trail and Foothill Trail to create the accessible trail loop. The path starts on Gold Bluffs Beach, accessed by the unpaved Davison Road (not for vehicles over 24 feet). This fern-lined trail has very little elevation gain as it meanders through absolutely enormous trees, including the main attraction, Big Tree. West Ridge, Prairie Creek Trails Loop This description starts at the trailhead on Newton Drury Parkway (260 ft elevation) and takes you north on Prairie Creek Trail parallel to the road until you reach Zigzag 2 Trail which makes a U-turn taking you quickly up the ridgeline to above 800 ft on West Ridge Trail.

Trail can also be accessed via Brown Creek Trail, Foothill Trail, and Rhododendron Trail.

It’s not quite as spectacular as the nearby West Ridge and Prairie Creek loop, but it also gets fewer visitors.The scenery gets progressively better throughout the hike, culminating in two very impressive redwood groves — the Big Tree Area and the Rotary Grove. Combined with either Foothill or Prairie Creek Trail, this is a 2.5-mile loop.

Mileage: 0.9; Difficulty Level: Moderate, some steep grades; Description: Like many of the trails in the Prairie Creek area, this short route travels up a steep ridge though pristine old-growth redwood forest.

The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round. The 1.2 miles (1.9 km) of the Prairie Creek Trail is ADA accessible with a 99-foot elevation change. West Ridge, Prairie Creek Trails Loop. The Rhododendron Trail is located 24.0 miles from Trinidad, California (CA) in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The 1.2 miles (1.9 km) of the Foothill Trail is ADA accessible with a 77-foot elevation gain and a typical grade of 3%.

Perhaps the most unusual trail in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is the short loop around beautiful Fern Canyon, a sheer-sided, flat-floored ravine whose 30 foot walls are densely covered with dark green ferns.
If you hike the entire trail at once, the environment changes very little and after a few hours it can get kind of monotonous. The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always.
