Kitchen Design

Designing a smart kitchen demands a critical understanding of the balance between function, storage needs, lighting requirements and of course aesthetics!

Questions like how will the space be used and who will be using the kitchen the most often are important for us to know at OAL.

Notwithstanding the answers to these questions, we understand that the layout of each kitchen must take into consideration the need for easy accessibility between 3 important areas, the refrigerator where food is stored, the cooker, where food is prepared and the sink, where items are washed and cleaned. Correct alignment of these 3 points forms a KITCHEN TRIANGLE’ and though a decades old concept it is still relevant today in modern kitchens. The convenience of having these 3 important areas of meal production no more than a few steps away from each other

serves to increase the functionality and efficiency of a kitchen and is applicable to both large and small kitchens.

Other important considerations for a functional kitchen include design of cabinetry for convenient and practical storage of kitchen needs so that heavier items are in lower cabinets and lighter items or infrequently used items are in higher wall mounted cabinets.

Lighting is also a consideration that must not be an afterthought. Both general lighting and for instance, task lighting under the upper cabinets must be well provided for.

Lastly, when function has been well established, the OAL kitchen designer brings in the aesthetics of cabinetry and shelving as a final embellishment for a modern, beautiful kitchen to be proud of and able to provide long term
satisfaction for the users.
